'PARA PAR@ ` ╧TEXT ` ┴Barrymore, Ethel1879╨1959actorBorn in Philadelphia on August 15, 1879, the daughter of Maurice and Georgiana Drew Barrymore and the sister of Lionel and John Barrymore, Ethel Barrymore attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Philadelphia and, after first intending to be a pianist, made her stage debut at fourteen in a Montreal production of Sheridan╒s The Rivals, which also featured Lionel and her grandmother, Louisa Drew. She first appeared in New York with the same production in January 1894. She next appeared with her uncle, John Drew, in The Bauble Shop and then went to London, playing in Secret Service, The Bells, and Peter the Great in 1897╨1898. Returning to Broadway, she starred in the Charles Frohman production of Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines in 1901. Subsequent roles in A Doll╒s House and Alice-Sit-by-the-Fire, both 1905, Sunday, 1906, Mid-Channel, 1910, Trelawney of the Wells, 1911, DÄclassÄe, 1919, Rose Bernd, 1922, The Second Mrs. Tanqueray, 1924, The Kingdom of God, 1928, in which she opened the Ethel Barrymore Theatre in New York City, The Constant Wife, also 1928, Scarlet Sister Mary, 1931, L╒Aiglon, 1934, Whiteoaks, 1938, and The Corn Is Green, 1942, won her a great and lasting reputation in the theater. She also played in vaudeville, on radio, on television, and in motion pictures, appearing with both of her brothers in Rasputin and the Empress, 1932. Her performance in None but the Lonely Heart, 1944, won her an Academy Award for supporting actress. Born a member of the American theater╒s ╥royal family,╙ she earned her acknowledged position of first lady of the American stage.
